Know Your Health Care Options

The best place to get your health care is to see your Primary Care Provider, but if the office is closed and you have a sudden medical problem, what do you do? Know the options (and the costs) so you can get the help you need, when you need it.


Primary Care Provider (PCP)

It’s important for you to see a (PCP) on a regular basis for your health care needs, especially for sick visits and yearly physical exams.

See a Primary Care Physician (PCP) on a regular basis. Your PCP is your trusted partner who knows you and your medical needs, especially when you see multiple specialists. Your PCP will help you stay healthy, but more importantly they will already know all about you if you were to get sick.

Convenient Care

If you have less serious problems, go to a convenient care location.

These include the University Health Connection, (for faculty and staff and their dependents 18 years or older), the Little Clinics in many Kroger stores, and the Walk-In Care Clinic in Upper Arlington (1800 Zollinger Rd.)

Less Serious Problems Include:

  • Minor cuts
  • Scrapes or abrasions
  • Flu or flu like signs
  • Sore throat
  • Earaches
  • Cough or congestion
  • Sinus problems
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Rash form poison ivy or other things
  • Bug bites

Urgent Care

If you have a problem that may cause more pain or require x-rays and lab work, go to an urgent care center.

Wait time is less than going to an emergency room.

More Serious Problems Include:

  • Asthma or severe cough
  • Sprain or strain injuries
  • Broken bones in the hand or foot
  • Cuts that require stitches
  • Minor burns
  • Abscess
  • Migraine
  • Alergic Reactions

Emergency Room

If you have serious problems, you should go to the Emergency Room.

Serious Problems Include:

  • Heavy bleeding
  • Intense abdominal pain
  • Large open wounds
  • Sudden change in your vision
  • Severe headache
  • Chest pain
  • Problems breathing
  • Sudden weakness or trouble talking
  • Major burn injuries
  • Major broken bones
  • Head injury
  • Spinal injury
