Balancing Fitness and Family Life
Bonnie Castro, Wellcoaches Health and Well-being Coach and ACSM Exercise Physiologist; OSU Health Plan Health Coach

As parents we are always on the go, not only are we managing our own schedules, but our families too. Each day may seem rushed as we are getting to daycare or school drop-offs, going to work, attending after school activities, or rushing to sports practices. Our busy schedules tend to push our movement routines to the end of the to-do list. However, taking care of our physical and mental well-being is crucial, not just for ourselves, but for our families too.

How can you prioritize fitting in fitness when schedules are already overwhelming?

Integrate Movement into Family time: Determine age-appropriate activities that everyone can engage in. Go on a family walk or hike, turn on some music and dance, or find ways to turn exercise into a game.

Snack on Movement: Any bout of movement can improve health outcomes. Engage in exercise snacks throughout the day.

Schedule Your Workouts: Create time for fitness as a form of self-care. Engage in movement and schedule exercise sessions like an appointment that you need to attend.

Don’t Aim for Perfection: As you think about your routine, change your expectations and engage in movement that does not feel like a chore.

Use practical and sustainable ways to fit movement into your busy life. Healthier and happier parents will have more energy and patience. Fitting in fitness will set a good example for children and help to create social bonds.
