The summer weather makes it easier for some of us to enjoy nature, animals, and blue skies. If you’re looking for more peaceful moments this summer, consider spending time outside practicing ecotherapy.
Ecotherapy is the practice of “spending time in nature to increase healing and growth.” Research shows that this can provide benefits for those experiencing several different mental and physical health conditions. There are several types of ecotherapy, from structured group programs to individual activities like gardening.
For me, ecotherapy often includes moments of mindfulness. I recently spent an evening walking around in a local prairie area watching birds and other wildlife. By the time I left, I was relaxed and realized I had been focused only on the present moment, not thinking about the rest of my day or what I needed to do next.
We can’t always devote an entire evening to ecotherapy, but there are smaller ways to add it to your day, like sitting under a tree at lunch, taking a break on a bench outside, or noticing how the sun feels on your skin. Your local parks system or library may even offer outdoor programs to give you a taste of ecotherapy.
You can make time outside whatever you need it to be. Try some different ecotherapy activities this summer and find what works for you.
