Choosing Balance, Not Perfection
Bonnie Castro, Wellcoaches Health and Well-being Coach; ACSM Exercise Physiologist; OSU Health Plan Health Coach

The start of a new year often brings a surge of motivation, and many of us gravitate towards setting goals focused on physical wellness. But as schedules tighten and barriers arise, that initial spark can begin to fade. When gym sessions become less frequent and meal-prep containers stack up on the counter, we reach a crucial moment to reflect on our goals and well-being. Rather than letting your goals taper off, now is the perfect time to create a more sustainable approach and define what wellness truly means to you.

Wellness is the active, lifelong process of making choices that support a healthy and balanced life. It extends far beyond daily movement or a meal-prep calendar. True wellness is multidimensional, encompassing physical, emotional, financial, intellectual, creative, social, social, spiritual, environmental, digital and career wellness.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by ten different dimensions when your daily to-do list is already full. To simplify this, it’s helpful to remember that many dimensions of wellness overlap. As you redefine your approach, look for activities that meet multiple needs at once. Some examples include:

  • Participating in a group fitness class to support physical wellness while also enhancing social wellness through connection, community and a sense of belonging.
  • Taking your dog for a walk to incorporate light movement for your physical wellness, enjoy the fresh air for environmental wellness, and connect with neighbors to improve your social wellness.
  • Cook more meals at home to improve your financial wellness by saving money, reduce stress and support emotional wellness, and use nourishing ingredients to enhance your physical wellness.

As you outline your approach, keep in mind that you don't need to give 100% to every dimension every day. Instead, focus on creating balance. Take time to explore each dimension and identify what matters to you the most. Rather than adding more habits to your to-do list, work to build a personal toolkit that helps reduce stress, boost your energy, and improve your long-term health.
