Give Life Coaching a Try in 2025
Suzanne Vickers, LISW-S, Ohio State University Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

Perhaps you are having difficulty in life, but you aren’t sure what direction to go in. Counseling isn’t exactly what you need because you want to talk about your time management skills, organization or just would like an accountability buddy to accomplish your goals. Life coaching could be just the right thing for you.

Most people are familiar with the counseling benefits within the Ohio State University Employee Assistance Program (EAP); however the EAP also offers free life coaching. With the EAP, you can receive five complimentary virtual life coaching sessions, per eligible member, per rolling calendar year. Life coaching is generally not covered by insurance so the benefit is a fantastic opportunity to try out an alternative personal well-being service that may have not otherwise been an option. It is important to note, the life coaching benefit can not be used at the same time as the EAP counseling benefit, by the same individual.

So how do you decide if life coaching is for you?

If you're looking to achieve specific personal or professional goals, improve performance, or make significant life changes, life coaching might be the right choice. Coaches help you create actionable plans and provide accountability. Life coaching typically involves a shorter-term commitment focused on achieving specific outcomes within a set timeframe than does typical counseling.

It is important to note that life coaches are not mental health professionals. While most life coaches may have certifications from coaching programs, they are not required to have formal mental health training.

With life coaching you can get help with achieving personal and professional goals; managing life transitions, overcoming obstacles; strengthening relationships; improving communication; and assistance with stress and time management as well as help with managing multiple projects and demands.
