Honoring the Past, Growing Forward
Olivia Bower, LISW; The Ohio State University Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

Each May, Memorial Day reminds us to pause and remember those who have served and the sacrifices they made, and to reflect on the moments that define our shared history. As the season shifts and the days grow longer, it also offers an opportunity to consider how the people, places, and experiences in our own lives have shaped who we are today.

Remembrance begins with reflection. When we reflect on our experiences, we consider not just what happened, but also how it shaped us. So as the weather changes and we approach summer, set aside time to reflect on the past few months. Where did you experience growth? What shaped you in this season? Who in your life, or which moments, contributed to your growth?

Next, we may begin to feel or express gratitude for those people, places, or moments. Practicing gratitude regularly has several benefits, including supporting physical and mental health and relieving stress. You can write down what you are grateful for or share with someone how their support has impacted you.

Consider what it means to honor or remember your experiences. This may include celebrating accomplishments, regularly practicing gratitude, or even just taking time to reflect. The way you honor your experiences is unique to you and your personality.

Reflecting on change can sometimes feel uncomfortable or complicated. If you would like to explore this further, please contact the Ohio State University Employee Assistance Program (EAP) by calling 800-678-6265 or visiting here.
