A Mindful Approach to Managing Transition
Olivia Bower, The Ohio State University Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

Any change, like starting a new job or shifts in workflow, can bring many feelings and ideas to adjust to. You might be excited for some changes and hesitant about others. No matter what the change is, it’s beneficial to understand your response and learn ways to help yourself adapt.

We often see three stages of transition: endings, the in-between, and new beginnings. You might notice that you experience a mixture of seemingly conflicting emotions in each of these stages.

Going through a breakup, moving, or experiencing any other “ending” can be difficult. You may feel grief or anger at the loss of something familiar or your regular routines. You could feel anticipation of the new beginning and everything you need to figure out before then. You might even feel excited or relieved about the ending.

Similar layers of feelings happen at each stage of transition. We often want to avoid “negative” emotions or the emotions that don’t feel “right.” But avoiding or judging our feelings can keep us stuck in them. Instead of feeling stuck, consider what could help you move through change.

First, reflect on what is changing for you. Notice the feelings you have without trying to push them away or judge them. Practice using helpful coping skills like exercise, sharing with a loved one, or participating in a hobby you enjoy.

As you move through the ending and toward the new beginning, you may feel overwhelmed by new tasks and changing routines. Consider how you can make tasks more achievable and be gentle with yourself during this time.

You can also spend time reflecting on the opportunities that change will bring. Without minimizing the endings, there are likely positives to be found when the dust has settled.

Using these strategies can help you adjust to change, and sometimes you need additional support.
